Butterfly Staxx is another addition to NetEnt’s “Staxx” series of games. Neon Staxx was the first of its kind when it was released in 2015. While Neon Staxx provides a vibrant, high-energy gaming experience with wild animals and neon symbols, Butterfly Staxx takes a softer approach. Set against a picturesque landscape at dusk, NetEnt’s designers have created a dreamy, almost alien world filled with natural wonders like glowing butterflies and colorful tropical flowers. The clever use of soft colors, angular low-poly graphics, alluring animations, and tranquil electro sounds contribute to an enchanting and exotic game. It’s all very picturesque, serene, and dare we say … slightly feminine?
As the title suggests, the butterfly is central to the theme and the features of Butterfly Staxx. The Butterfly symbol plays an integral part in Re-Spins and Butterfly Spins (we will discuss these features in detail shortly). The Butterfly symbol is also the highest paying symbol on the reels, awarding 120x your line bet for 5 of a kind. The remaining high-value symbols are the Pink, Violet, and Blue Flowers, which pay 80x your line bet. The low-value symbols are the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack card symbols. The Lotus Flower is the Wild symbol, and substitutes for all paying. The Scatter symbol is the key to unlocking the Butterfly Free Spins feature. Landing 3 or more awards up to 7 Butterfly Free Spins.
Butterfly Staxx has a betting range that starts at €0.20 and peaks at €400.00 (depending on the wagering limits set by the casino). With a Return to Player (RTP) of 96.8%, Butterfly Staxx is classified as a low to medium volatility slot, which means players can expect a higher frequency of small and mid-sized wins.
Players will be keeping a keen eye on the all-important glowing Butterfly symbols. Not only are these symbols the most valuable, but they also play a key role in the Re-Spins and Butterfly Spins bonus features.
Re-Spins
Butterfly symbols are stacked on all reels, and when a stack of Butterfly symbols lands and fills an entire reel, the Re-Spins feature is activated. All Butterfly symbols fly to the leftmost position on the same row (not already occupied by a Butterfly symbol) and remain locked in place. All remaining symbols spin again. Any additional Butterfly symbols landing on the reels also fly to the leftmost position on the same row, and another re-spin is awarded. The process will continue until no more new butterflies land. Given these are the highest-paying symbols in the game, this will often lead to decent wins!
Butterfly Spins
Butterfly Spins are essentially Free Spins with a twist. 3 or more Scatter symbols appearing anywhere on the reels activate the Butterfly Spins.
During Butterfly Spins, only Cocoon symbols land on the reels. Cocoon symbols can be dormant or active. Active Cocoon symbols turn into Butterfly symbols, and these Butterfly symbols fly to the leftmost position on the same row. Butterfly symbols remain on the reels for the duration of Butterfly Spins, and cash prizes are paid out after each successful spin.
Butterfly Staxx is available to play in multiple languages on desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. We loaded the game on a laptop, and appreciated the fast load time. Our first impressions of the layout, graphics, and animations? Favorable! The symbols are colorful and contrast beautifully against the darker background. The fireflies add some life and movement to an otherwise static background.
Before embarking on our 200 spins game test, we checked out the paytable set our bet size to €4.00 using the familiar NetEnt betting interface. Being a low to medium volatility slot, we were expecting fairly frequent low to mid-sized payouts and that’s exactly what we got.
On spin 50 we landed Butterflies across all 5 reels and triggered a Mega Win worth 32x total bet. Unfortunately, we didn’t land a full stack of Butterflies, so we didn’t trigger the Re-Spins feature this time.
On spin 93 we landed 4 Scatters and triggered 6 Butterfly Spins. Overall we landed 3 Butterflies on reels 1 and 2, and 2 Butterflies on reel 3, awarding a total feature payout of €128.00. Not bad! It’s interesting to note that Butterfly Spins payout after each spin, even if you don’t land any additional Butterflies, which we thought was quite generous.
